During my recent trip to Hong Kong I stumbled upon an unique Starbucks tucked away in the Central Financial District. It is designed like an old fashioned Hong Kong coffeehouse with antique arrangements and style. I was pleasantly surprised by the close resemblance.

They even serve traditional Hong Kong goodies. Brings back good childhood memories.

Definitely a great place to check out if you are in the Central area.

During my trip in Asia, eating was on the very top of the list for me. I love trying new cuisines and tasting different flavours especially in a new environment where foods can taste so different. The first stop was in Seoul, Korea where kimchi was served almost every meal, then off to Beijing – the home of Peking Duck, then I made my way down China through Fuzhou where seafood is so fresh. Did late night dim sum in Guangzhou then finally to Hong Kong where there is an abundance of hybrid cuisines. Here are some highlights below!

A couple of Sundays ago, I was in the Kerrisdale area and decided to drop by Faubourg (French style café) for a quick pastry. It was late afternoon and the place was packed. Lots of people getting pastries to go and enjoying a sweet treat.

There were lots of choices and after a long deliberation I decided on a Strawberry Tart and a White Chocolate Raspberry Puff Pastry. Both were made creatively and carefully. The tart had a great filling with hints of Vanilla beans and the pastry was flaky with just the right amount of white chocolate. It wasn’t too sweet or overwhelming. A perfect match.

Look at the strawberries!

This café also serves afternoon tea and has a great selection of breads. I will definitely go back to try the tea sets or the Napoleon.

Bonchaz– About a month ago I was given a Goodnews coupon gift for a lunch deal at Bonchaz. I have always wanted to try their Bonchaz buns so I was really excited about the gift. You would think that since the cafe is located in downtown and only a few blocks from work that I would have used it instantly. Not the case.

I finally found time to check out the cafe this past week and I’m so glad that I did. The coupon deal was for 2 sandwich and soup combos with 2 Bonchaz buns for only $6.95! What a great deal!

original, banana-walnut bonchaz

These buns are delicious. They remind me of Chinese pineapple buns but less sweet. The buns were soft and I really enjoyed the sweet topping. Although both flavors were great I personally prefer the original with no filling inside. All the buns are baked fresh in store. Can’t wait to go back and give the matcha a try.
